Did you know that each hour in each civilised country, at least five men die from conditions that are potentially preventable? Or that men live on average six years less than women?
According to the Australian Medical Association, many men treat their health as a low priority while they juggle the competing demands of work and family life. Apparently, men often adopt a “functional view” of their bodies. Only when their work, play or exercise is below par, they understand there may be a problem. Another fact is that most men stop visiting doctors regularly between the age of 20 and 45. By the time the begin visiting GP’s again, their ailments are more chronic in nature!
Prevention and early detection are key! To prevent and mitigate risks of obesity, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc., there is a thing you can do: an annual men’s health check! Read More

Traditionally many companies offered group health insurance to their employees, but with the recent economy downswing many companies have had to either cut their group health insurance all together or are being forced to switch plans to a more affordable group health insurance rate. The reason why they are doing this is because for many of these employers the group health insurance rates can cost the company a lot of money and now these companies are looking for ways to cut expenses and one of the ways is by changing to more affordable group health insurance companies or even worse, cutting the group health insurance all together. There are many families across the country where the entire family is dependant on the group health insurance that is offered to one parent who works at a company where the group health insurance is offered. In companies where the group health insurance is completely cut out of the budget there is a good likelihood that many of the employees may have to Read More

The group health insurance rates at my day job increased 33% this year, after rising just over 30% last year. I have a family of three, and the new health insurance rates are now 11% of my salary, which in my opinion, is too high (while I won’t disclose my actual salary, I will state that I earn a fair amount). The new health insurance rates made me think about getting individual health insurance for my family.
Group vs. individual health insurance? Before we go further, it is important to understand the difference between individual health insurance and group health insurance. Because coverage is guaranteed with group plans, they can be more expensive for relatively healthy individuals than an individual plan, which is priced based on your specific health history. In my case, my family and I are healthy, so it is a good idea to investigate individual health Read More

The socialized system of healthcare delivery and financing, a relic of the British colonial era, still practiced in Sierra Leone has glaringly failed and any efforts at resuscitating it without implementation of major structural and systemic reform will only serve to prolong the inevitable.
Throughout the world, total state control and management of industries, services, markets and the means of production are gradually becoming a relic of the past. This model as practiced in the Sierra Leone healthcare system has empirically been proven to have served only to stifle innovation, growth, productivity and quality output with a resultant decline in overall living and healthcare standards of the citizenry. The current state of the hospitals and health centers glaringly highlights the systemic problems endemic in the entire government owned, managed, financed and operated health care system.
